COMPASS – Prospective patient optimisation – predicting and managing risk of harm

How do clinicians make good decisions on managing risks and complications for individuals patients?

If we take surgery as an example, a patient may be given some information pre-operatively about risks from a leaflet.  That information is based on aggregated statistics and does not consider detailed patient physiology and existing complications.

This has implications for the hospital:

  • Should the operation really have gone ahead?
  • Are high risk patients being denied operations as surgeons are concerned about their ‘stats’?
  • Higher complications, mortality and readmissions than necessary
  • Increased operational expenses to manage avoidable harms
  • Beds and resources blocked with patients that could have avoided harm
  • Significant complaints/clinical negligence impact
  • Patients not able to provide truly informed consent

COMPASS is a tool for prospective management of patients based around individualised assessment

COMPASS helps hospitals avoid treating unsuitable patients and act on predicted complication risks to reduce harms and mortality.

For example, COMPASS helps surgeons accurately assess and record risk for more informed consent, better treatment decisions and to protect themselves when performing essential, high-risk operations.

The COMPASS risk of mortality individualised for a patient allows the surgeon to decide whether to operate or to optimise the patient first.

An individualised list of complications and percentage risk of them occuring is also output by COMPASS for a patient. This allows the hospital to manage the patient better to avoid these complications – therefore avoiding harm, mortality, complaints, negligence related costs etc.

A personalised assessment of risk supports a truly informed discussion with the patient and decision making on steps forward

Personalised assessment of risk

Highly accurate risk predictions for mortality and complications.

Triage of patients by doctors

Provides an auditable record that the risks have been understood by the patient.

Indivisualised patient risk analysis supports decisions on optimisation for better outcomes before a referral or in hospital prior to an operation

Reduce harm and mortality

Hospital can manage the patient’s individualised complication risks to reduce avoidable harm, mortality and associated costs and operational complexity

Simple & Powerful

Surgical assessments completed in around a minute and reports generated there and then.

Based on learning over 30 years, 120 million patient records, data from 46 countries, inputs from 300 hospitals, operation in 11 countries.

How does it work?

A clinician uses Compass to enter information for a patient (approximately one minute).

The app is web-based so integration is very simple.

Reports are seen on the device and can be printed out as shown below.
